Objectives
- Relate the fundamental theoretical concepts associated with data communications processes and technologies
- Explain the fundamental components of digital or analog communication systems
- The ability to analyze the frequency spectrum representation of analog and digital signals
- Discuss the fundamental limitations of communications/transmission systems
- Understand the concepts associated with multimedia signals digitization and related processing techniques and tools
- Understand the basic multiplexing mechanisms underlying current transmission/communications systems
- Relate several concepts and definitions from the field of Information Theory with coding algorithms for data communication or storage processes
- Describe the underpinning theory and techniques allowing for error detection and correction in digital communications.

- Signal Analysis:Time/frequency spectrum domain, Fourier analysis, Average power, Signal bandwidth, Parseval Theorem
- Transmission Systems: Linear time-invariant systems, Transfer functions, Power gain/loss, Noise, Transmission bandwidth, Nyquist rate, Ideal/real filters/systems
- Digitization: Analog/digital signals, Sampling theory, Uniform/non-uniform Quantization, PCM, Errors in digitization, other techniques
- Multiplexing: Historical perspective, Time Division Mult. (TDM), PDH/SDH/SONET hierarchies, Statistical TDM, Queuing and scheduling, Frequency Division Mult. (FDM), Hybrid techniques
- Information Theory: Information measure, Entropy, Coding of sources with/without memory, Compression, Shannon-fano and other coding techniques, channel information rate limits
- Error Control Coding: Block codes, Hamming distance, Detection/correction capabilities, systematic codes, error control circuits
